This course introduced me to the theories and principles of design thinking and the
ethos of maker culture. Methodologically, it familiarised me with ethnographic
approaches, notably design ethnography and digital/virtual ethnography. Conceptually, I discussed the notion of critical making. Practically, I created a podcast on design thinking, received a basic introduction to 3D printing, and participated in a ‘mini’ design sprint. Combining these conceptual, methodological, and practical approaches, I was provided with a holistic understanding of the interrelations
between design thinking and maker cultures. It emphasised the relevance of digital
making in contemporary societies, while also encouraging me to critically interrogate
the limits of ‘designing for social change’.
