For the first part of the Digital Collections II course, we had to choose an object which was significant for us during the pandemic and create a 3D model. Producing a 3D object for the first time, I had to face some challenges and find solutions to overcome them.

One of the problems I encountered was the inability of my laptop to do certain steps of the processing. When trying to do processing steps, the software kept on giving an error message. As our professor warned us not having enough computational power might have caused us some problems, I decided to create a Cloud account on Metashape. By using the Cloud, the processing not only was working perfectly, but it also had a speed which allowed me to save some time. Unfortunately, as the cloud is commercial, I had a restriction on processing hours which limited me when trying to perfect my model. For future works, I will try to save more of my free processing time and use it less for trial-and-error processes.

Another main challenge I encountered was due to my decision of using a box as my first object. When processing the dataset for the first time, the program created some holes in the models which could only be partially fixed with some tools (see Figure 2). As a consequence, I recaptured my dataset three more times with different settings (close-ups, less light intensity, etc.). This cost a lot of time, not only to physically retake the pictures, but also for sorting them out and masking them. In the end, I unfortunately found out that the problem was not due to my pictures but the software itself. I therefore decided to change my object to a paint brush to overcome the issue. For future works, I will definitely try to avoid choosing objects with smooth and uniform surfaces.

The drawbacks I encountered for producing this 3D model definitely helped me in a better selection of my object for future works. The problems also helped me to think constructively and try to find solutions that would still allow me to produce a model. Working everyday with the software, getting used to it and the continuous challenges definitely improved my speed for this procedure as well as my overall 3D modelling skills.
