My name is Ella van Geuns and I am pursuing my master’s degree in Media Studies, Digital Cultures at Maastricht University. I was born in Cape Town and studied my bachelor’s degree in Journalism and Media Studies in a small town in the Eastern Cape of South Africa. This town, in its rich cultural diversity, helped foster my interest in the media landscape. Throughout my studies, I explored and indulged in different mediums of communication. Though my love for storytelling did not begin there….
As a child I carried a green point-and-shoot camera with me everywhere. Well, it was either my camera, or a sheet of paper and a pencil. Since these early moments of documentation, I have directed my time towards observing, communicating and unpacking the varied nature of human experience. And now, as part of my past and current studies, I am inspired by multimedia storytelling. In my final year of my Bachelor’s degree, I created a portfolio of work dedicated to meaningful storytelling during the Covid-19 pandemic. To view this portfolio, click here
In this master’s programme, I shall explore the media landscape in relation to digital culture. And while I examine the world around me (and the relationship amongst human behaviour, technology and media), I shall reflect on my observations through this blog.
