Dark Net: Explained

The Internet is a vast web of information that connects everyone from around the globe to each other. But how much do the users of the internet actually know about what’s hidden under the surface? The internet changed everything, especially the way humans interact and live. The internet-connected humans in ways that are unimaginable and also gave them the opportunity to gain access to any service or product, whether it be legal or illegal, immoral, or unethical.

The World Wide Web actually consists of three different categories. First, there is the surface web, which is basically the most common one people use. If one uses search engines or posts something on social media, they are using the surface web. The second category is the deep web, which is content on the internet that is not indexed by search engines. Hence, it’s very similar to the surface web, however, it consists of more secrecy. The deep web consists of websites that are encrypted to hide their existence sliced without IP addresses to make them unrecognizable. The users of those websites also have encrypted software to completely mask their identities. And in the midst of the deep web lies the darkest part of the internet, namely the dark web/net. “Darknet is the darker side of the web while the Surface web is the lighter side.”

The Darknet is hidden under a layer of protection and is considered a haven for illegal online activity, whether it be drug and human trafficking or the distribution of child pornography. The problem is that it makes it much easier for criminals to commit these crimes and it’s all hidden in plain sight.

But why would there be a whole network online that governments can’t really monitor?

The answer is simple because governments need a platform for themselves that couldn’t be monitored. Hence the united states government decided that they wanted a system that could protect their communications wall online. The government wouldn’t risk for their transmissions to be hijacked by anyone online, thus they worked on onion routing. But what is onion routing?

“Onion routing protects any data sent by essentially wrapping it with multiple layers of encryption where the innermost layer contains the original message.” Due to the existence of onion routing darknets like Tor came to be. What is Tor? “Tor is an anonymity network that hides one’s identity as one browses the web, shares content, and engages in online activity. Tor also makes it impossible for websites to sell one’s data to third parties like businesses, in order to profit from personalized advertisements.

What is the difference between darknet and dark web?

Dark Net is the overlay network built in the deep web and the Dark Web are pages on servers that are only accessed by an appropriately permissioned account. The darknet can essentially be accessed by anyone, however, there are risks involved in accessing it, due to the big number of criminals lurking around it. So, it’s up for each individual whether it’s worth the risk to put oneself in this kind of danger or not.
