BLOG ASSIGNMENT 5: THE USE OF REGIONAL AND IMMIGRANT MINORITY LANGUAGES IN MUSIC

Regional Minorities and Music: Szüreti Felvonulás

This will be just a quick and short post about a Swabian (German) tradition that is still present in parts of Hungary. I have spent 7 years of my life going to school in a town – Felsőgalla – where these traditions are actively kept alive. Most people speak fluent German and also identify as being part of the German minority.

Some of the German Hungarians (Ungarndeutsche) are also referred to as Danube Swabians. One of their traditions is celebrating the end of vintage and harvest by throwing a parade. People dress up in traditional cloths and sing traditional songs throughout the town.

While going to a bilingual German nationality school, I have learnt about these traditions, dances and songs. After living 6 years in Germany, attending a German nationality school in Hungary has helped me to preserve my ability speak German and deepened my knowledge about the German culture.

Back then I might not have always enjoyed these traditional events, but looking back now, they are all fond memories.

Please check out my post about regional minority languages where I talk in more detail about this topic.

Best,

Monika
