Drielandenpunt & the Linguistic Landscape

‘Vaalsberg’ (Mount of Vaals) is a hill with a height of 322.7 metres, making it the highest point in the Netherlands. However, besides the aforementioned fact, the location is also a tripoint between Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands and referred to as the Drielandepunt. Lia, Eva and myself were interested in exploring the place in order to find out what signs and maps are used in the area, and in which languages. Consequently, we went to explore the linguistic landscape at the Drielandepunt and this video is a representation of our findings. Enjoy!

English Medium of Instruction (EMI) es un término que puede definirse como el uso del és como medio para la enseñanza. Hoy en día, es cada vez más común que las universidades ofrezcan programas bilingües (por el cual entendemos que la material es enseñada en dos idiomas diferentes) o de completa formación en inglés. Mi experciencia con el English Medium of Instruction (EMI) empezó en España. Como ya comenté en mi primer post (h), mi primer año de Universidad lo realicé en Madrid cursando Primary Education. La experiencia que tuve allí me permite hacer una comparación con la experiencia que he tenido en Maastricht University, que, para que negarlo, ha sido MUY MUY MUY diferente.

Who am I?

Hello! My name is Vivian Lee and I am 21 years old. I was born in the Netherlands in Oosterhout, which is a small town near Breda. When I was almost 4, my family moved to Singapore so my childhood memories were mostly created there. During that period when I was still living in the Netherlands, I spoke Dutch and Cantonese with my family. In Singapore, I learned English and Mandarin, languages that I continue to use on daily basis. In 2003, my family moved back to Oosterhout and then I learned Dutch again, because that was already completely out of my system.  Continue reading Who am I?
